Film Industry Jargon – Part 2

20130226-222131.jpg

Yesterday morning I was “rush called” into work on teen wolf. A good friend of mine does the show and poor thing she was feeling very sick. So I went in and covered for her yesterday and today.

Rush Call: Is when we are called in at the last minute, sometime actors/actresses are rush called when we suddenly need to shot a different scene that day than planned (this is semi unusual), or as happened yesterday someone is just way to sick to go in and someone is called in suddenly.

——————————————
Today’s “jargon” post is more about what departments do what, and who is responsible for the items you see on screen. There’s also an interesting item below that!

Prop / Prop Department: Anything an actor/actress holds or touches. This includes a crazy amount of things. They also cover rings, watches, backpacks, and occasionally purses.

Set dressing: The furniture and decor on a set. Though as stated above if the actor/actress is picking up the set dressing it becomes a prop temporarily.

Wardrobe Department: The wardrobe department dresses the actors/actresses. From crazy costumes to suits, to nude underwear for shower scenes. They also cover earrings, purses (most of the time), and things like that as they effect the style of the character.

On yesterday’s post my awesome friend Cindy asked what “Checking the Gate” meant so I wanted to share that today as well!

Checking the gate: is a term from when everything was shot on film. In film cameras there was a “gate” that the film passed through when the was rolling. After every set up (before the camera is moved) the 1st Assistant Camera (or 1st AC) person whould shine their flashlight in to check to make sure there wasn’t a hair, dust, dirt, lint, or film particles on it. If there was we would have to reshoot it. Since a “hair” on the gate or a bad gate meant that most likely the image of that was burned into your film.

Now days as we mostly shoot digital the 1st AC checks to make sure it recorded properly but watching the last few seconds of the take. But it’s no fun to say “check the chip” so everyone still says “check the gate”

Film Industry Jargon – Part 1

In the film industry (like a lot of industry’s) we have jargon, some of it makes sense some of it is just odd and random, slowly over time I want to share some of it with you! Here are the first few! 20130225-194944.jpg
New girl call sheet.

Call sheet: The paper we get everyday to tell us the details of the following day. Including:
•What scenes are being shot.
•Where we are working.
•Where to park.
•What time cast and crew are supposed to arrive.
•What special items are needed for the scenes.
•Names of all crew members.
• How many background actors are working.
• The schedule for the following two days.
• The weather (yes seriously, very helpful when getting ready for a day work outside)
• the nearest hospital.
• Important phone numbers.

20130225-195034.jpg
Those silks up in the sky were put up by my father and his grip crew for the show Bones. I stepped out of where I was working on the Fox lot and saw them working.

50×50 silk: Used to diffuse and soften sunlight over a large area. As you can see they used more than one to cover the area necessary. (They come in other sizes as well.

Also pictured above is a backlot….

Backlot: The part of the studio that is facaded to look like a city street. (If you’ve ever been on a studio tour you’ve seen this)

There’s also:

Best-boy: this is the second in command in both the grip and electric departments, ie: Best Boy Grip (this is often my fathers job) or Best boy Electric.

Ten-one: Means going to the restroom. When I go to step off set for this I tell them “I’m ten-one” and they know I’m running to the restroom but I will be right back.

The last one i’ll share today is, video village.

Video Village: This is the area where the director, script supervisor (me), writers, and producers sit to watch what is being filmed.

That’s all for now! If you have any questions or comments please feel free to comment below!

Weekend Rambling

Here’s to another nice weekend.

Saturday included working on a book I’m starting to write with a friend….

Then what turned into redneck style backyard target practice with a tiny BB gun. (My roommate dreamt this up since I wouldn’t let him shoot bb’s in the yard without a way to catch them all)- (yes it’s PVC and a fitted sheet… It worked surprisingly well.)

I also sent my rough cut of Rusty J‘s music video to him!! I cannot wait to hear his thoughts and see the tweaks he’s going to make.

Yesterday was crazy busy! I finally started my book I have been wanting to write for a year, it’s non fiction but I cannot say much more than that. My friend is working with me and wow is it an endeavor!

Today I want to share my week in pictures and (as you can see below, in some) my new addiction to Instagram. I guess I could only resist it so long…

Spanish Rice

Today was a nice day handling stuff at home, fertilized the veggie garden, cleaned, worked on Rusty J’s music video, and made dinner with Lindsey among other things. Lindsey’s friend Mikey even came and joined us for dinner!

For dinner we went to the hispanic market by my house and got Carne Asada, so I made Spanish Rice to go with it!
20130221-220243.jpg

Danielle’s Spanish Rice (Revised)

20130221-220203.jpg

20130221-220216.jpg

• Add 4 C Chicken broth to a medium sauce pan.

• Season with: Salt, Pepper, Cumin, Chili powder, Cayenne pepper, & paprika.

20130221-220501.jpg

20130221-220506.jpg

• After that is boiling, Add 2 C White Rice.

20130221-220550.jpg

• Cover and Cook 20 minutes. Check and stir at 10 minutes and 15 minutes.
(So sorry I forgot to photograph this part!)

• When the rice is cooked and the liquid is all absorbed, stir in 1/2 Can Tomato Sauce & 1/2 Can Diced Tomatoes.

20130221-220851.jpg

20130221-220950.jpg

20130221-220938.jpg

20130221-220943.jpg

Enjoy!

Also here is how Lindsey cooked the Carne Asada! (I’ve always made it on the BBQ but this was great as well!)

She cut up the meat.

20130221-221240.jpg

20130221-221248.jpg

Then sautéed it until well cooked.

20130221-221333.jpg

20130221-221344.jpg

It was sooo damn good! I think she also added a little beer near the end!

20130221-220931.jpg

We ate all this with some salsa verde, queso fresco, warmed tortillas and avocado! Perfect quick dinner!

Back to Dexter … Season 8!

20130219-231022.jpg

Today I got to go visit the Dexter crew, and work with them for a couple hours, oh how I have missed this group! My friend needed me to cover him for a couple hours so I went. They were shooting semi close to my house which made it even better. It was just so great to see everyone. Almost the whole cast was there today as well as the crew I have grown to know so well over many years.

20130219-231047.jpg

Here are some shots from season 7, now that they’ve aired I can share with you some of the scenes I was there for!
