New roost for the coop

20130508-214955.jpg

I had a bunch of scrap wood left over from the fence making and randomly decided to build a new roost for my coop.

My girls didn’t have a proper roost when they were young so they didn’t quite get the concept right away, now two of them tend to sleep on it, though if Starla’s mad she still sleeps on the floor of the coop. Lucy has always slept in the nesting box, Ethel used to sleep in the box with Lucy ( yes, the same box, it was very crowded) but now she finally roosts every night. Not that you really needed to know all that but there you have it!

So here’s what I built, we’ll see if they actually use it!

I took a bit of the scrap and cut all my pieces.

Built the base frame. 18 x 11.5 …. I may have proportioned it weird….

I added the risers, 3 in, 4.5in, & 6in.

Then added 1×2 to the top of the risers.

We’ll see if they actually use it.

Chicken proofing the garden

Recently my girls decided to eat my potato plant growing in the backyard. I have read that chickens tend to avoid plants that are poisonous to them, apparently mine are not that smart. The leaves and stems on potatoes are poisonous to us and them. Luckily they survived their consumption of the plant. Here it is after it bounced back from them. 20130508-193425.jpg

After this and planting more of my spring garden I decided fencing was desperately needed. So Lindsey and I set out on this mission! 20130508-194454.jpg

You can see the old fencing on the right that I was using, the chickens went right through it. 20130508-193946.jpg20130508-194717.jpg

We used 2×4’s as posts. We built every other section into a 3ft x 3ft frame of 2×2 wood so it will open. Then we chicken wired everything.

The next day we built the smaller one where my lettuce is now for them summer. 20130508-195433.jpg20130508-195446.jpg

After both areas were done I decided to add 1×2 to the top of all the sections that don’t open to add stability. ( since we didn’t cement the posts in)

It was an awesome day meeting people, meeting rescue groups, selling treats, meeting awesome dogs and their foster families, and eating great food from Ragin’ Cajun, and Cake Bar.

Please check out Cake Bar’s website if you are in the LA area, the owner Grace is wonderful and we were so happy to see that she was a vendor at this event as well!
