Garden Party with mom

20130429-195402.jpg

This past weekend I went to a “Garden party” with my mom. Her neighborhood hosts this every year, it’s basically 5 large properties with incredible gardens. You start at one house to get your wrist band and drive to the other properties and have a self guided tour. They have vendors, a beer garden, musicians, and various gardening seminars. We got our wristbands and headed to the property with a huge organic garden 20130429-200128.jpg
At this property there was a seminar on organic gardening that we stayed for, it was wonderful. It was held next the their incredible pond full of giant catfish and turtles 20130429-200413.jpg
Plus i was able to buy an organic raspberry plant while there, theymhave a wonderful little farm stand. 20130429-200256.jpg

They also make and sell these incredible raised beds (thats the farm stand in the background) 20130429-200739.jpg

Next we went to a property with different themed gardens: cactus & agave, iris, deer grass, Moroccan, faux arroyo seco, zen, and vegtable. This property had beautifully done stone work all over.

The third property we went to had an heirloom tomato garden, huge artichoke plants, a hydroponics set up, and cute little signs with verses all throughout their gardens. 20130429-201936.jpg

The last property we went to was the most stunning, they participated last year as well. They have a massive pool with incredible bridges, a wake boarding system, ramps and beach entrances. They also have a putting green (pool side), terraced fountains all over, multiple fire pits, an outdoor movie theatre, water slides, and a gymnasium with an indoor heated lap pool (the local high school uses this for their swim team). 20130429-202708.jpg

New veggie garden plants! Yay spring!!

Yesterday after work I got a wild hair to go to Armstrong garden center and get some new plants for my veggie garden. My seeds I started probably… a month ago got very beat up by unusually strong Southern California winds last week, the green house tumbled twice, (my bad for not securing it better from the wind) and my poor seedlings the ones I tried to salvage are barely surviving. I will still plant them and hope they make it but I also wait some new ones today!

20130423-220122.jpg

20130423-220117.jpg

Armstrongs is my only local place I knew should have some organic veggies and oh boy did they! I got way more than I planned.

I got:
3 kinds of tomatoes
Cilantro
Mint
2 bell peppers
Artichoke
Celery
4 kinds of lettuce (the chickens will love this)
Cucumber
Yellow squash
Purple carrots (I’m so excited about these)
Basil
Snap beans
Watermelon
And
3 kinds of strawberries!

I got part of them in the ground last night and hopefully the rest in the next day or two.

Last week I also got some organic red potatoes and planted them in this awesome faux whiskey barrel!

20130423-220651.jpg

Now I can use this amazing garden marker rocks Lindsey made for me!!

20130423-220833.jpg

She even made me three new ones last night when she saw what I bought, hehe I’m a happy girl.

I still cannot get over the detail in them! Especially the bell pepper, wow. Thanks Lindsey!!

Fertilizing seedlings and planting more!

20130303-153138.jpg

While we were sitting outside Sunday afternoon my roommate decided to fertilize the seedlings. The products we use are by General Organics.

20130303-155016.jpg

20130303-155054.jpg

He mixed the concoction up in the watering can and feed the seedlings.

20130303-155201.jpg

20130303-155217.jpg

Then we decided to plant some more, he wanted to try some in coco dirt, and I wanted to try some with a little granular fertilizer mixed in.

20130303-155333.jpg

20130303-155345.jpg

20130303-155401.jpg

20130303-155411.jpg

After we finished planting we moved the greenhouse to a sunnier spot and added out new pots.
Here’s mine:

And his:

Spring ’13 Veggie Garden update

Here’s my first update on our spring 2013 veggie garden a few of our seedlings started popping up and later I want to show you this awesome little greenhouse I just got from Lowe’s!
20130214-224441.jpg
20130214-224457.jpg

20130214-224506.jpg

Hopefully the next week or two here they will all start sprouting!

Right now I’m totally in love with this new little greenhouse Lindsey and i found at Lowe’s!20130214-224623.jpg

20130214-224658.jpg

20130214-224705.jpg

20130214-224727.jpg

Oh yeah! Also, my carrots from last spring were finally ready… Well they were probably ready a while back but I never harvested them since the tops hadn’t started dying. But either way the chickens were scratching around in the planter they were in and it reminded me. They looked huge, when I started digging and here’s what i got!

20130214-235446.jpg

20130214-235323.jpg

20130214-235350.jpg

I cannot wait to cook with them! It’s so nice to pick things right out or your garden for dinner, I’m really hoping my garden this year produces a ton more then last year!! We shall see.

What are you planting this spring? Have you started your seeds yet? (I know it’s a bit early for most of the country) Do you start yours inside or out? In pots or straight into the ground ?

Spring 2013 veggie garden

Finally back to my garden! Today I started my spring seeds.

20130205-203509.jpg

The other day I found seed trays and small plastic starter pots at Dollar Tree (I love that place), I already had lots of seeds, and a bag of organic soil; so I decided to start planting my spring seeds!

20130205-230152.jpg

I went through my seeds a picked out what I wanted to plant, probably way too much stuff but since I start my seeds in trays outside they don’t always take.

I planted 20 pots and 2-16 hole trays.

20130205-230404.jpg

20130205-230418.jpg

20130205-230423.jpg

So far I planted:

2 kinds of tomato
Tomatillo
Cucumber
Basil blend
Large basil
2 kinds of pumpkins
Yellow squash
Green summer squash
Lots of lettuce (for me and the hens)
Cantaloupe
Watermelon
Quinoa
Cilantro
2 kinds of Corn
Broccoli
Carrot
Cabbage

20130207-153320.jpg

20130207-153309.jpg

I would love to hear what you are planting this spring! If you start from seed or seedling? How you start your seeds? How you prep your garden beds?

Chickens helping in the garden

20130202-220346.jpg

Yesterday the I let the girls out in the garden with me for a while, they scratched up my garden beds all over the yard. Luckily this was a good thing for me as I have really been needing to do this! I saw them doing all this and it prompted me to finally clean out the dead pumpkin vines all over.

20130202-220706.jpg

20130202-220715.jpg

20130202-222027.jpg

Now this planter is all prepared for spring veggies I’m starting seed for!

We also moved their coop today at my friends prompting. It really needed to be done, they had mounded everything so bad they were running out of space!

20130202-220944.jpg

20130202-220953.jpg

We put them up in the coop to do this since Echo was in the yard, I don’t think they were very pleased until they came out and saw their new space that still has some grass in it 🙂

20130202-221010.jpg

After all this I flattened out the mess and tried to spread it around since its hopefully going to be great fertilizer.

How do you handle the mess from your coop? Do you spread it around the yard, compost it, or throw it away?

That’s all for today but I will leave you with a few other photos from their roaming today.
